Who has backed JCoSS?

Originally set up in July 2001 in response to a growing demand from parents, JCoSS is now an independent, voluntary body, which operates through the Jewish Community Secondary School Trust, a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee.

Who is funding JCoSS?

Around 75% of the capital funding - around £36 million - has come from central government.  The rest - around £10-12 million - has been raised by the community, led by Gerald Ronson.

How much money did you raise from the community?

We have raised in excess of £10 million from the community.

Who has contributed?

Money has come from every section of our community from secular to mainstream Orthodox.  Obviously for reasons of confidentiality we can’t talk about individual donors, although our President, Gerald Ronson, has made public his contribution of £1million for which we are incredibly grateful. The Pears family has generously supported the Special Resource Provision.

Has this meant that funds have been taken away from other community projects?

Quite the opposite: JCoSS has brought into the community £36 million of public money.  This includes £10 million for the Pears Special Resource Provision, which is only eligible for public funding because it is to be co-located within JCoSS.

Is there a voluntary levy and, if so, how much is it?

In common with other Jewish schools, a voluntary parental contribution is payable by those that can afford it, to fund the extra costs of a Jewish school, such as security. For 2010/11 it will be £1385.

Tell me about your Director of Jewish Education

Elaine Robinson, Director of Jewish Education, joins JCoSS from the UJIA where she worked as Head of Jewish Social Responsibility; formerly Deputy Director of Jewish Life at Immanuel College; teaches at the London School of Jewish Studies (formerly Jew's College), Limmud and New North London Synagogue; a trustee of Jewish social action charity, Tzedek; grew up at Childwall Orthodox synagogue in Liverpool, and was an active member of B'nei Akiva before studying at Brovenders, as well as Machon Pardes.

Tell me about your head teacher

Jeremy Stowe-Lindner took up the post on 1st June 2009. He was previously Deputy Headteacher at Swakeleys Secondary School in Hillingdon, which was recently identified by the DCSF as one of London's most improved schools.
